Thank you for your interest in refereeing for us! We primarily use youth referees (grades 5-12) for our U8 games (grades 1 and 2, girls and boys). The following information provides answers to the most common questions about refereeing for NEU.
Sideline Referees: Certification is not required for sideline referees for U8 games. Uncertified referees usually know the game by having played it extensively and are familiar with the basic flag signals. Otherwise, training is pretty much on-the-job. The atmosphere with this level of players is relaxed. Nonetheless, to be a good referee, one needs to know the rules of soccer, as well as be attentive, focused, and comfortable making calls and using flags. Sideline referees should be 11 years or older, or be in the spring of 5th grade or higher. Uncertified sideline referees are paid $5 per game (approximately one hour of time total). NEU provides uniform shirts; referees provide their own black shorts, black or white knee-length socks, and appropriate footwear.
Center Referees: Center referees must be certified, and therefore, there are no age restrictions. Certification classes are scheduled through the USSF/Kansas Referee (http://www.kansasreferee.net). Certified referees are paid $16 per game when they center and $8 per game when they work the sidelines. NEU provides uniform shirts, although many certified referees purchase their own standard uniforms if they plan to work for other clubs, too. Centers must provide a set of flags (one for each sideline referee), a stopwatch, and a whistle. Contact the Referee Coordinator for assistance with these for NEU games, if needed.
Scheduling: All U8 games are played at Mohawk Park in Mission, located on the northwest corner of 67th Street and Lamar. There are two fields, one in the southeast corner of the park, and one in the northwest corner. Games are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays, mornings and afternoons. Scheduling of referees is done on a week-to-week basis.
The NEU Rainout Phone Number is 913-905-6020. The line will be updated at least 30 minutes prior to the start of games for the day and may be updated throughout the day if weather conditions change.
Payments: All NEU U8 referees are considered independent contractors according to IRS regulations. No deductions are taken from payments. Payment checks are mailed twice per season.
